ap2552/ap2553/ap2552a/ap2553a document number: ds35404 rev. 8 - 2 10 of 16 www.diodes.com february 2014 ? diodes incorporated a p2552/ ap2553/ ap2552a/ ap2553a application note (cont.) current-limit threshold programming the current-limit threshold can be programm ed using an external resistor. the current- limit threshold is proportional to the cu rrent sourced out of i lim . the recommended 1% resistor range for r lim is 10k ? r lim 210k ? . figure 15 includes current-limit toler ance due to variations caused by temperature and process. this graph does not include the external re sistor tolerance. the traces routing the rlim resistor to t he ap2552/53 and ap2552a/53a should be as short as po ssible to reduce parasitic effects on the current-limit accuracy. to design below a maximum current-limit threshold, find the intersection of r lim and the maximum desired load current on the i os(max) (i lim ) curve and choose a value of r lim above this value. programming the current limit below a maximum threshold is important to avoid current limiting upstream power supplies causing the input voltage bus to droop. the resulting minimum current-limit threshold is the i ntersection of the selected value of r lim and the i os(min) (i lim ) curve. best fit current-limit threshold equations (i limit ): ? ? k 08 . 20 ) a ( i 904 . 0 lim ) max ( lim r ? ? k 94 . 19 ) ma ( i 925 . 0 lim ) typ ( lim r ? ? k 26 . 20 ) ma ( i 956 . 0 lim ) min ( lim r figure 15 current-limit threshold vs. r lim thermal protection thermal protection prevents the ic from damage when the die temperat ure exceeds safe margins. this mainly occurs when heavy-ove rload or short-circuit faults are present for ex tended periods of time. the ap2552/53 and ap2552a /53a implements a thermal sensing to mo nitor the operating junction temperature of the power distribution switch. once the die temperat ure rises to approximately +160c (140c in case the part is under current limit), the thermal protec tion feature gets activated as follows: the internal thermal sense circuitry turns t he power switch off and the fault output is asserted thus preventing the power switch from damage. hysteresis in the thermal sense circuit allows the d evice to cool down by approximately +20c before the output is turned back on. this built-in thermal hysteresis feature is an excellent featu re, as it avoids undesirable oscillations of the thermal prot ection circuit. the switch continues to cycle in this manner until the load fault is removed, resulting in a pulsed output.
ap2552/ap2553/ap2552a/ap2553a document number: ds35404 rev. 8 - 2 11 of 16 www.diodes.com february 2014 ? diodes incorporated a p2552/ ap2553/ ap2552a/ ap2553a application note (cont.) reverse-current and reverse-voltage protection the usb specification does not allow an output device to source current back into t he usb port. in a normal mosfet switch, curr ent will flow in reverse direction (from the output side to the input side) when the output side voltage is higher than the input side. a revers e-current limit (rocp) feature is implemented in the ap2552/53 and ap2552a/53a to limit su ch back currents. the rocp circuit is activated when the out put voltage is higher than the input voltage. after the reverse current circuit has tripped (reached th e reverse current trip thres hold), the current is clamped at this irocp level. in addition to rocp, revers e over-voltage protection ( rovp ) is also implemented. the rovp circuit is activated by the reverse voltage comparator trip point ie; the difference between the output voltage and the input voltage. for ap2552/53, once rovp is activated, fault assertion occurs at a de-glitch time of 4ms. recovery from rovp is automatic when the fault is removed. fault de-assertion de-glitch ti me is same as the de-assertion time. reverse-current and reverse-voltage protection (cont.) for ap2552a/53a, once rovp is activated and when the condition exists for more than 5ms (typ), output device is disabled and sh utdown. this is called the "time from reverse-volt age condition to mosfet turn off?. fault asse rtion occurs at a de-glitch time of 4ms after rovp is reached. recovery from this fault is achiev ed by recycling power or toggling en. fault de-assertion de-glitch time is same as t he de-assertion time. special functions: discharge function when enable is de-asserted, or when the input voltage is under uvlo level, the discharge function is active. the output capacit or is discharged through an internal nmos that has a discharge resistance of 100 ? . hence, the output voltage drops down to zero. the time taken for discharge is dependent on the rc time constant of the resistance and the output capacitor. fault response the fault open-drain output goes active low for any of following faults: current limit threshold, short- circuit current limit, reverse-voltage condition or thermal shutdown. the time fr om when a fault condition is encountered to wh en the fault output goes low is 7ms (ty p). the fault output remains low until over-current, short-circuit current limit and over-tempe rature conditions ar e removed. connectin g a heavy capacitive load to the output of the device can cause a momentary over-c urrent condition, which does not trigger the fault due to the 7ms deglitch timeout. this 7-ms timeout is al so applicable for over-current recovery an d over-temperature recovery. the ap2552/53 a nd ap2552-2/53a are designed to eliminate errone ous over-current reporting without the need for external components, such as an rc delay network. for the ap2552/53 and ap2552a/53a when the reverse voltage condition is triggered, fault output goes low after 4ms (typ). this 4ms (typ) timeout is also applicable for the recovery from reverse voltage fault. when the ilim pin is shorted to in or gnd, current-limit th reshold and short-circuit current limit will be clamped at typically 75ma.when the ilim pin is shorted to in or gnd the ap2552/53 and ap2552a/53a fault pin will not assert dur ing current limiting conditions; the fau lt pin will assert during short circuit conditions. power supply considerations a 0.01- f to 0.1- f x7r or x5r ceramic bypass capacitor between in and gnd, cl ose to the device, is recommended. this limits the input voltage drop during line transients. placing a high-value electrolytic capacit or on the input (10 f minimum) and output pin(120f) is recommended when the output load is heavy. this precaution also reduces power-supply transients that may cause ringing on the i nput. additionally, bypassing thedeviceoutput with a 0.1 f to 4.7 f ceramic capacitor improves the immunity of the device to short-circuit transients. this capacitor also prevents output from going ne gative during turn-off due to parasiticinductance. power dissipation and junction temperature the low on-resistance of the internal mosfet allows the small surface-mount packages to pass large current. using the maximum o perating ambient temperature (t a ) and r ds(on) , the power dissipation can be calculated by: p d = r ds(on) i 2 finally, calculate the junction temperature: t j = p d x ja + t a where: t a = ambient temperature c ja = thermal resistance p d = total power dissipation
